We encourage you to spend some time with God this week and go a bit deeper on this topic. Please consider these study questions for further reflection:
Question 1
We know that the gift of salvation is free to us, (Romans 6:23, Ephesians 2:7-9) but it does have a cost – Jesus paid that cost on the cross. In Luke 14:25-33 however, Jesus points out that if we want to be his followers (disciples), there is a cost to us. According to this passage, what does it cost to be a disciple?
Question 2
Jesus said, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26. The word “hate” in the original Greek language is “miseō” – which when used like this means, “to love less than”. In other words, following Jesus involves putting family 2nd. What are some of the ways you have seen this occur?
Question 3
Following Jesus means that we must “die to ourselves”. (see Luke 9:23, Gal 2:20, Romans 6:6-7) What does this mean to you? What are you prioritizing – or loving – more than following Jesus?
