The True Vine

Passage: John 15:1
Service Type:

Bible Text: John 15:1 | Speaker: David White | Series: I Am | The Gospel of John was “written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31) One of the ways that John chose to reveal Jesus’ identity to his readers is through the seven “I am” statements that Jesus makes throughout the book. Each of these statements reveals something about who Jesus is. The purpose of this sermon series is to magnify the greatness of God in Jesus by seeing Him for who He says He is, so that we and our hearers “may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

We encourage you to spend some time with God this week and go a bit deeper on this topic. Please consider these study questions for further reflection:

Question 1

In John 15:1, Jesus claims to be “the true vine.” In what ways is Jesus the True Vine? What does that mean? How is He true? How is He the vine?

Question 2

In John 15:2, it says that God the Father “cuts off every branch in [Jesus] that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” How have you seen God “prune” your life in ways that have resulted in greater flourishing and fruitfulness?

Question 3

In John 15:5, Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” What does it mean to remain (or abide) in Jesus? What is this fruit that results from remaining in Jesus?
