Lovers of Saints

Series:
Passage: 1 John 3:11-18
Service Type:

The letter of 1 John reminds us of who we are as Christians, which necessarily flows from rightly understanding who Christ is. Responding to false teachers, the letter provides clear identifiers of true believers. It draws heavily on the language and themes from the Gospel of John such as light, life, love, sin, obedience, and family. Rather than a logical-sequential argument that builds from one passage to the next, topics are introduced and then returned to multiple times. Therefore, each of our teachings will begin with a particular passage but draw significant insight and expression from parallel passages in 1 John and the Gospel of John. Our goal, like John's, is to provide clear expressions of a faithful Christian life by looking at both our identity and our activity as Christians. Join us in our study of 1 John!

We encourage you to spend some time with God this week and go a bit deeper on this topic. Please consider these study questions for further reflection:
Question 1
Some of the last words Jesus spoke to the disciples were, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34=35) What were some ways that Jesus showed love to his disciples? How can we show this same type of love to one another?
Question 2
1 John 3:18, we are encouraged to not only love in words or speech, but with actions. The Apostle Paul gave us some specific “action” points to follow. Read Philippians 2:1-4, 14 and Romans 12:9-16 – What are some ways we can put love into action?
Question 3
Loving Others = Loving God. Read Matthew 25:31-46 - What are some practical ways we can show our love for Jesus by loving others? What tends to hold you back from practically serving other believers around you? (love of comfort, selfishness of time or possessions, jealousy, lack of believing God to provide for your own need…) What are some next steps you can take to put love into action?
